Peanuts!

We took Thomas, yesterday, to see the allergy specialist. We got news that wasn't too surprising: his allergy to milk and soy are gone….
We also got some news a little more surprising: his sensitivity to peanuts has quadrupled! On a scale of 1-???, where 14=a 100% chance of reaction every time exposed to the food, three years ago he "scored" a 15, yesterday we discovered that he is now a 60! Doctor said T is guaranteed to react and pretty significantly every time he encounters peanuts.
Considering it's a life threatening allergy, I appreciate the peanut-free policy our church has adopted.
I know there are some who assume it's because of our son (the assistant pastor's child), that the policy was adopted… no, it was because of T the importance of protecting the kids who come and we are unaware of their allergies the policy was put in place. Peanut allergy is the most common food allergy, and it is a life-threatening allergy.
People say, watch your kid and let us bring what we want to eat… but that crumb from the pb cookie that falls on the brownie my child decides to eat, could kill him. I am all about watching my kids and being aware of what they are doing (including eating), but I certainly don't want a child that comes to church on the bus, to die because "parents should keep an eye on their kids, and we can bring whatever we want. Why should I be limited by someone else's problem?"
Anyway…(sort of a soapbox, I guess)
So life goes on… peanut butter is a treat we get when T isn't with us. Not a huge inconvenience. Oh, sure it makes it a bit more work to find everything from soda crackers to chocolate chips (& especially holiday candy!), but for the kids, if they've never had it, they don't miss it. And to have our precious T, it is definitely worth it!
